Fun Facts of World Cities – Alphabetically


Hi everybody.
I just completed my work in office and had some spare time. So I thought about creating a list of places alphabetically and their facts. Hope you enjoy it (and learn too !).

Alaska - More than half of the coastline of the entire United States is in Alaska .
Brazil - Brazil shares a border with all South American countries except for Chile and Ecuador.

Canada - Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world combined. Canada is an Indian word meaning ‘Big Village‘.

Detroit - Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, carries the designation M-1, so named because it was the first paved road anywhere.

Edmonton - You can see the Aurora Borealis in Edmonton, Canada. Said to be one of the best cities in the north to view the Northern lights weather permitting, they can be seen almost every other night during the winter.
Fiji - There are 322 islands in Fiji and over 500 small islets. Around 110 of these islands are inhabited, although 87% of the population lives on the two biggest islands Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The islands are spread over 194,000 km² (75,000 mi²) of which just 10% is land.

Germany - Germany has over 400 zoos, the most in the world.
Hawaii - Hawaii is the only US state with a tropical rain forest

Istanbul - Istanbul, Turkey, is the only city in the world located on two continents.

Jerusalem  - Jerusalem is sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims (the 3 major religions).
Karachi - Karachi is the 3rd-largest city in the world by population within city limits.

Los Angeles  - Los Angeles’ full name is: El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula – and can be abbreviated to 3.63% of its size: L.A.
Mumbai - The Mumbai suburban trains or locals, the lifeline of the city carry more than 7.2 million commuters’ everyday, which is more than the total population of Israel.

New York City - There are more Irish in New York City than in Dublin , Ireland ; more Italians in New York City than in Rome , Italy ; and more Jews in New York City than in Tel Aviv , Israel.
Ohio - There are no natural lakes in the state of Ohio , each one is manmade.

Pitcairn Island - The smallest island with country status is Pitcairn in Polynesia , at just 1.75 sq. miles/4,53 sq. km.
Queenstown - People over 75 years old can bungy jump for free in Queenstown (the oldest person to bungy jump is a 94 year old man from Southland, New Zealand).

Rome - There is a city called Rome on every continent.
Siberia - Siberia contains more than 25% of the world’s forests.

Toronto – There are over 100 different languages spoken within the city of Toronto. Another fact about Toronto is that Toronto is one of the most multicultural destinations in North America.
Udaipur - Surrounded by lakes, it is famous as the Indian 'Venice of the East'.

Virgin Islands – British Virgin Islands are a British Overseas Territory, located in the Caribbean and uses US Dollar as currency.
Western Australia – Perth, the capital of WA, is the most isolated capital city in the world. The closest city, Adelaide, is 2,200 km away.

Xi’an – It is said that: "Go to Shanghai and you will find a 100-year-old China; go to Beijing and you will find a 1000-year-old China; go to Xian and then you will find a 3000-year-old China."
Yukon – Watson lake in Yukon province of Canada, has over 30,000 signposts from cities and towns around the world.

Zanzibar - Zanzibar is not a single island, but an archipelago. The two main islands are Unguja (the largest) and Pemba, while there are numerous smaller ones too.
